The Word Itself
The Hidden Meaning of Ally
The word ally comes from the Latin alligare — meaning to bind toward. It shares its root — ligare — with one of the most important words in human history: Religion. The early church father Lactantius described religion as religare — to bind back to God. Same root. Same binding.

Tissue that binds bones
Ephesians 4:15–16
You Are the Ligament
"Speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work."
Ligare gives us the word ligament — the connective tissue that binds the body together. Scripture uses that exact word. Paul says the whole body is joined and held together by every supporting ligament — and that as each one does its quiet work, the body doesn't just hold, it grows, building itself up in love into Christ himself, the head.
Your missionaries on the field are strong, called, and positioned. But a limb severed from the body cannot grow. Without Allies binding them in — funding, praying, encouraging — they are isolated and vulnerable. You are the tissue that holds them to the body, and holds the body to Christ.
This is what it means to be a Barnabas. He bound Paul to a church that feared him. He bound his own wealth to the mission. He bound scattered believers together at Antioch. He never stood in the spotlight — he was the ligament through which the body grew. When you give, pray, and encourage, you do the same.
You are the ligament — and through you, the whole body grows into Christ.
Ancient Meaning
An Act of Religion
When you become an Ally you do not just bind yourself to a missionary. You bind yourself to what God is doing in the earth. Every gift. Every prayer. Every person you invite into the fold.
Is an act of religion — in the deepest, most ancient sense of the word.
